TESTING UPDATE: PAUL RICARD, VALENCIA,
FIORANO
Formula One testing resumed on
Tuesday as the teams continued their preparations for the forthcoming
Monaco Grand Prix.
Juan Pablo Montoya topped the times for Williams (1m 12.089s) at the Paul
Ricard circuit, as a four-day session got underway at the French track.
Close behind was Williams colleague Marc Gene (1m 12.673s).
The McLarens of Alexander Wurz (1m 13.135s) and Pedro de la Rosa (1m
13.876s) were third and fifth respectively, split in the timesheets by
the Toyota of Olivier Panis (1m 13.724s).
Wurz will be at the wheel of the new McLaren MP4-18 on Wednesday when it
makes its track debut at Paul Ricard. Renault are also due to join the
teams for the first of two days of running.
Meanwhile, at Valencia, BAR and Sauber were in action, with Takuma Sato
(1m 12.9s) and Anthony Davidson (1m 13.7s) leading the way from new
Sauber signing Neel Jani (1m 16.4s).
"It was the first real Formula One test today for Neel Jani after the
straight-line test in Vairano at the end of April,” explained Sauber
race engineer, Remi Decorzent, “and for this he performed very well.”
Finally, at Fiorano, Felipe Massa continued Ferrari’s testing programme
in the F2003-GA. Focusing on tyre and aerodynamic work, he completed a
total of 25 laps with a best time of 58.238s. He hands over to Michael
Schumacher on Wednesday.
