A new addition to the C8 range appeared in September 2001 at the
Frankfurt Motor Show in Germany: the C8 Double 12R. It's the
competition version of the C8, developed for endurance racing in the
Le Mans GT and FIA GT-N class. The car is completely constructed from
aluminum; its body is handmade and riveted. It features a 4.0 litre
version of the V8 engine with up to 450 hp with class required
air-restrictors and 620 hp without restrictors. The rear of the car
has been lengthened compared to the regular C8 for better aerodynamics
and a large aluminum adjustable rear wing has been fitted to generate
more downforce. The name Double 12 refers to a 24 hours record set in
1922 at Brooklands in a Spyker C4 road car, proving the capabilities
of Spyker road cars. With the Double 12 Spyker wants to prove once
more that their road cars are capable of sporting successes as it
shares the chassis and suspension parts with the Laviolette road car.
Spyker's belief in aluminium is very apparent as the entire body is
made up of aluminium panels riveted together. The Double 12 is capable
of top speeds of over 330 km/h and accelerating from 0 - 100 km/h is
possible in under 4 seconds.
This model has been named after S.F. Edge's record braking 24 hour
drive in a Spyker C4 in 1922 at the Brooklands circuit in England. In
two consecutive stints of 12 hours (during daylight) he completed 2860
km, braking his previous 1907 record by far. At the time it generated
a lot of publicity and boosted Spyker's image, which the modern Spyker
company hopes to replicate with this new racer.
THE SPYKER C8 DOUBLE 12R IS BASICALLY IDENTICAL TO THE STANDARD ROAD
CAR, THE C8 DOUBLE 12S. IN ORDER TO ALLOW FOR EVEN WIDER WHEELS AND
TIRES THE “R” MODELS HAVE EXTRAWIDE ALUMINIUM REAR WHEEL EXTENSIONS
WHICH ARE RIVETED ONTO THE HAND MADE ALUMINIUM BODY. THE SPYKER C8
DOUBLE 12S IS POWERED BY AN ALL ALUMINIUM SPYKER 4.0 LITRE V8 ENGINE
BOASTING 500 BHP (STAGE III),550 BHP (STAGE ЧV) OR 620 BHP (STAGE V).
THE “R” HAS UP TO 450 BHP WITH RESTRICTORS. THE ENGINE IS CAPABLE OF
9500 RPM AND IS LINKED TO A MANUAL SPYKER SIX-SPEED TRANSMISSION
WITHOUT ELECTRONIC INTERVENTION THAT POWERS THE REAR WHEELS. THE
INDEPENDENT FRONT AND REAR SUSPENSION IS FULLY ADJUSTABLE COMPLETE
WITH KONI IN-BOARD SHOCK ABSORBERS AND UPRIGHTS CNC MACHINED FROM
SOLID BILLETS OF ALUMINIUM.
A TWIN-CIRCUIT BRAKE-SYSTEM WITH DASHBOARD ADJUSTABLE BRAKE BALANCE IS
FITTED TO BOTH “S” AND “R” MODELS. THE “R” MODELS ARE FITTED WITH
AP-RACING BRAKES WITH 6-PISTON ALUMINIUM MONOBLOC BRAKE CALLIPERS AT
BOTH THE FRONT AND THE REAR. THE DISKS ARE BOTH VENTILATED AND GROOVED
AND THE BRAKE DISC DIAMETER IS 380 MM TO BOTH THE FRONT AND THE REAR.
THE “S” MODELS HAVE STANDARD AP-BRAKES WITH 6 CALLIPERS TO THE FRONT
AND 4 TO THE REAR, BUT MAY AT THE REQUEST OF THE OWNER BE FITTED WITH
THE AP RACING BRAKE SYSTEM. BOTH “S” AND “R” MODELS COME STANDARD WITH
FORGED 18” ATS ALLOY RIMS. MAGNESIUM 19”SPYKER AEROBLADE™ DESIGNED
RACING WHEELS WITH CENTRAL LOCKNUTS AND PROPELLER SHAPE ARE OPTIONAL
ON “S”. BOTH MODELS ARE FITTED WITH DUNLOP TYRES, (FRONT 27/65-18)
(REAR 27/68-18).
THE “R” FEATURES A NUMBER AERODYNAMIC ADDITIONS SUCH AS THE ALUMINIUM
REAR WING TO GENERATE HIGHER LEVEL OF DOWNFORCE AT HIGH SPEEDS UP TO
315 KM/HR. IN ORDER TO ALLOW FOR THE WIDER WHEELS AND TIRES ALUMINIUM
WHEELARCH EXTENSIONS ARE RIVETED ONTO THE ALUMINIUM HANDMADE BODY.
